Quando David Robertson invitò Ivan Fedele a scrivere la musica per un film muto, in occasione del centenario del cinema, il compositore fu ben felice di poter scegliere La chute da la maison Usher di Jean Epstein, opera che egli ben conosceva e che considerava molto stimolante dal punto di vista poetico.

Rifiutando in partenza l'opzione del commento musicale, Fedele scelse la via più difficile, ma certo più suggestiva, dell'interpretazione. I termini della questione vengono ribaltati: il film è considerato come un soggetto musicale (parecchi suoi elementi sia ritmici che formali lo suggeriscono) rispetto al quale la partitura tesse un contrappunto. In altre parole la 'necessità' verticale che si instaura fra immagini e suoni, non contraddice la possibilità che questi siano organizzati in una forma orizzontale indipendente, che si emancipa dalla condizione di mero commento. Anzi, in un rapporto funzionale di questo tipo, i due universi linguistici si amplificano reciprocamente e trovano la loro sintesi in una virtuale unità di tempo che azzera lo scarto cronologico fra il 1928 e il 1995.

When David Robertson invited Ivan Fedele to write the music for a silent film to mark the centenary of the birth of the cinema, the composer was only too happy to be able to choose Jean Epstein's La chute de la maison Usher, a work he knew well and considered highly stimulating from an artistic point of view.

Refusing right from the start the option of a musical commentary, Fedele chose the more difficult, but certainly more suggestive path of interpretation. The situation is in fact reversed: the film is considered as a musical subject (many of its rhythmic and formal elements suggest this) against which the score is conceived as a counterpoint. However, the vertical 'necessity' that is set up between the images and sounds, does not preclude the possibility that the latter are organized in an independent, horizontal form, which is free from the condition of mere commentary. On the contrary, in a functional relationship of this kind, the two linguistic universes amplify each other reciprocally and find their synthesis in a virtual unity of time that nullifies the chronological gap between 1928 and 1995.
